Enforcing Workplace Nutrition Compliance for Improved Health and Wellbeing in the Nigerian Workplace
Poor nutrition has vast physical and economic consequences. Most Nigerians have a poor diet, leading to a high prevalence of various chronic diseases. These diseases may cause some minor disruptions or hindrances to everyday life while severely debilitating for others. Overall, nutrition-related chronic diseases cause reductions in productivity, lost wages, and reduced economic output. This translates to reduced revenue for the federal government while simultaneously requiring more spending to treat the disease and provide financial assistance for those unable to work to their full potential because of illness.
As well as benefiting employees, investments by companies in health and wellbeing can lead to better employee engagement, reduced absenteeism and higher performance and productivity. Research has shown that good nutrition can help lower the risk of many chronic diseases, including heart disease, stroke, some cancers, diabetes, and osteoporosis. In addition, a workplace nutrition program encourages healthy eating among all employees, emphasizing fruits and vegetables and whole grain products; low-fat dairy products, lean meats, poultry, fish, and legumes; and small amounts of salt, sugar, and saturated fat.
